The Shocking Fireball
Festival of Nejapa, El Salvador.
(Jhuli Corrêa)
Every year, young people from El Salvador perform "fights"
with balls fire. This event has religious roots and plays the fight between San
Jerônimo and the devil in a mixture of religious ritual and popular tradition
on August 31.
This game is held every year in the small village of Nejapa, near the
capital of El Salvador, San Salvador.
The tradition began after a major volcanic eruption in 1922, requiring
all city residents to abandon their homes and the city.
The balls of lava expelled from the volcano destroyed the village and
were interpreted by the locals as the arms of the city's patron, Saint Jerome
in his fight against the devil.
The
villagers perform this celebration ten years, but authorities fear that - due
to the lack of rules manifestation - the day the fire gets out of control.
*To date there
are no known serious injuries caused by the joke.
I found it very interesting that commemoration.
